I learnt French in primary school and then again studied in a French university, it was useful for me when I started to learn Italian even on my own, did it without a teacher or lessons. Now using Italian I find the transition to Spanish even easier: I can't speak it but can read decently. The structures and vocabulary seem remarkably alike. On the other hand, none of those languages can help to understand Portuguese haha

I have to admit, even with my years of training in Spanish, I messed up on the "gustarme" sentence. I read/heard it as "She really began to like me." Your story, Nate, reminds me of an old joke. A man goes to see his doctor. The doctor asks him how he is feeling. The man says, "FANTASTIC," and launches into a long story about a wonderful woman he met and how well they are getting along." There are many different accents and ways to speak Spanish in Spain. In some places we use the same words and verbs that Mexican people use. We export the language from many different areas in Spain!

"oh well, you'll still be understood" is horrible advice. We wouldn't say to someone learning English, "don't bother with irregular verbs - people will understand you just fine if you say, 'I goed to the store and buyed some groceries."

La única razón para decir "nos va a estar enseñando" en vez de "nos va a enseñar" es que en inglés la segunda forma se confunde con una especie de imperativo, pero eso no ocurre en castellano, no hay razón para decir "nos va a estar" con gerundio para el futuro.

videos like these make me feel more comfortable to take some lessons on Italki. I just took two lessons so far but in my second lesson I got improved a lot (in both Spanish and stop being ridiculously shy) I even asked the teacher to only speak to me in Spanish even if I struggled which is something I couldn't say with the first teacher even tho I deeply wanted to. I don't even fear making mistakes anymore, so what? I made plenty of them in English and I'm sure I'll keep making mistakes even in my mother tongue. It's about getting out from your comfort zone and it's a great feeling! so thanks for encouraging us with your videos ❤

Damn, Nate, She sounds more Mexican than You! I had my wife listen to her speaking ( Wife is from Chihuahua and native speaker) Without telling her the background of the speaker I had her listen for a few minutes then asked her where ther girl was from. She said " Mexico" She couldnt believe she was Russian.

It’s not a lisp, just an accent . It’s ceceo, and in Latin America, southwestern Spain and the canaries its seseo.

This is good stuff and speaks truth. I make mistakes all the time, however, by being "pretty close" in many instances, the point is understood. The only time I'd recommend keeping your spanish crisp and on point is when talking to someone who's speaking professional all the time such as a Spanish teacher, Politician, Medical professional, etc. However, amongst laypeople, it's free game. On the contrary, many spanish speakers that I've spoken with make intentional mistakes with their vocabulary as well and we are all on the same page at the end of the day : D. It gets even more fun when Spanglish starts to happen.

There's one downside to getting your accent out ahead of your actual comprehension and speaking ability -- native speakers will hear you and assume your Spanish is _way_ better than it actually is.
